Developing new food materials using biotechnology

New approach for

Ezaki Glico has conducted long-term basic research programs based on the idea that innovative technologies and original materials are always being developed based on excellent research. In particular, we have worked on unique research activities and developed promising materials in the area of biotechnology, which is expected to have a major impact on various industries in the 21st century.

Our research objective is to develop new materials that will be used not only in the food industry but also in other new business areas. Focusing mainly on saccharides that have a major influence on food tastes, material properties and physiological functions, the development of new, useful saccharides using enzymes is underway at Ezaki Glico. These research programs have resulted in the development of cycloamylose, a high polymer cyclic saccharide developed by Glico for the first time in the world; Cluster Dextrin; alpha-arbutin; phosphoryl-oligosaccharide calcium (POs-Ca); enzymatically synthesized amylose, and many other new materials.

The Biochemical Research Laboratory, Glico's main research facility, has filed more than 90 patent applications relating to research and development of new materials. Furthermore, the Laboratory has had over 160 academic papers published in science journals in Japan and overseas. Enzyme-related technology and new materials developed by Glico has earned high recognition worldwide as cutting-edge research results.

Furthermore, more than 10 researchers at the Biochemical Research Laboratory have earned PhDs for their research work.

New materials are emerging one after another, promoting our Corporate Philosophy throughout the world.

Ezaki Glico has marketed new products using unique new materials developed based on our research results and expertise with saccharides and enzyme-related technology. R&D activities are also underway regarding high-molecule polysaccharides such as Cluster Dextrin, phosphoryl-oligosaccharide calcium (POs-Ca), α-arbutin, amylose and cycloamylose for use in food products.

These materials are used in our products such as CCD Drink, a sports drink containing Cluster Dextrin, and "POs-Ca," a chewing gum using POs-Ca. These products featuring new materials are successfully enhancing our competitiveness in markets of existing business areas.

We will devote continued efforts to develop and distribute new materials to better meet changing consumer and market needs. We hope to further advance our research activities for new materials so we can develop new technologies that help improve the quality of people's diet and life worldwide.
